VIRTUAL DERRYFEST 2020

At a recent Derryfest Committee meeting, it was decided to hold a "Re-Imagined" or "Virtual" Derryfest for this year due to the uncertainty of the pandemic. The Greater Derry Arts Council struggled with the moral dilemma of potentially putting our fellow citizens in harms way by holding the annual festival as usual this year.

Ultimately, we made the difficult decision to cancel the live and in-person Derryfest originally planned for Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020 at MacGregor Park for the safety of all our patrons, vendors, volunteers and entertainers.

The good news is that the GDAC is planning a virtual community outreach event in order to keep the tradition of Derryfest alive in the minds of our citizens and, also, present a fun and entertaining production for the citizens of Greater Derry.

Virtual Derryfest will be shown on several online streaming platforms, on Derry Community Access Media www.derrycam.org and on TV Ch. 23 on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020. If you miss it that day, it will be available on those platforms for several months.

So, while it is disappointing to have to cancel the live event, the GDAC hopes that the community will embrace the idea of joining us for our first ever Virtual Derryfest. The idea of a Virtual Derryfest was a suggestion from Owen Provencher, Derry Community Access Media Coordinator for the Town of Derry www.derrycam.org

He came up with a lot of great ideas for the Virtual Derryfest event including showing highlights from previous Derryfests, interviews with sponsors and will feature pre-recorded performances from some of our great dance, music, voice and theater organizations that entertain us each year at Derryfest.

It will be a "telethon" of sorts as we will encourage folks to donate via our GoFundMe page. The GDAC is truly thankful to DerryCam for suggesting the idea of a "Virtual" alternative and for helping develop programming ideas.

Derryfest is the Greater Derry Arts Council’s biggest fundraising event of the year and so canceling it hurts us too. The funds raised from Derryfest go to supporting the upkeep of the Derry Opera House and to keeping the Arts alive in our community.

We hope you will consider helping us overcome this shortfall by donating to the Greater Derry Arts Council with a tax deductible donation via our GoFundMe page (always consult your tax professional). Here is the link to our GoFundMe page. Your donation of any amount would be truly appreciated and would help keep Derryfest, the Derry Opera House and the Arts alive in our community for years to come.
